Bibliotherapy Books for Children and Young Adults

This guide shares strategies for finding popular books for children and young adults that could be used for bibliotherapy. Dictionary of Psychology defines bibliotherapy as "a form of psychotherapy in which the reading of prescribed texts forms an important part of the therapeutic process." In particular, this guide supports SPSY 6350 - School-Based Interventions: Children, Youth and Families and SPSY 6400 - School-Based Interventions: Groups, Classrooms and Systems. While some tittles maybe in Auraria Library's collection, there may be titles you wish to borrow that Auraria Library does not own, and this guide will help you explore ways to gain access to those titles as well. 

Finding Books for Bibliotherapy

There are many different ways to find books for bibliotherapy. This guide will explain how to find books at Auraria Library and to use the tool Novelist to discover titles by age group, by similar titles i.e. read likes, and by themes. 

Finding Books at Auraria Library 

If you would like to explore what books Auraria Library provides access to, you can use Start My Research to explore. Start My Research is the main search tool of Auraria Library and can be used to find articles, books, and many more kinds of information. 

In Start My Research, you can search by book title, author, keyword or subject. Use the content type filter to filter to books/ebooks. 

When you find an item you would like to use, either select the link for instant full text access or use the call number i.e. the book's address and the find it button to locate the book in Auraria Library. 

Finding Out if Auraria Library Owns an Item 

Looking for a particular title, start by looking in Start My Research. If you cannot find the item in Start My Research, look in Prospector then WorldCat using the links below. 

Finding Books at Your Public Library

While many Colorado public library's use Prospector, so you can borrow physical books held by them and have them sent to Auraria, it can be faster to borrow them from your local public library directly. Unfortunately, eBooks cannot be borrowed through Prospector. You will have to have a library card from the public library to use their eBooks, but it is easy to get a library card.  Public libraries often have large eBook collections, especially of popular books.  Anyone with a Coloardo id can get often get a public library card. Denver Public Library allows you to get an ecard, so you can register online without even having to go into to their library. You can access the eBook collections of several metro area public library districts below.

Novelist

NoveList is a database of novels broken into sections based on target age demographic, genre, and a variety of subjects. NoveList K-8 is an additional database catered specifically to people looking for books for younger children. This is a great way to discover books about a topic that are new to you.
