This guide is designed to guide you through your research for UCD Biology 1111. Remember, if you need additional help, you can always ask a librarian. Stop by the library, email me, or use the many sources on this guide.
Choosing a research topic
Finding a good research question is the first step in writing a strong paper. Choose a topic which is not only interesting to you but also appropriate to your capabilities and to the time available. Make sure your question is focused well and stated clearly. Ask your teacher or a librarian for feedback.
Without a good question it is difficult to determine the terminology for your search. If you don't have a well-defined research problem, don't panic! At least not yet. Use the library to come up with your research problem. Search Skyline for subject encyclopedias and browse the current periodicals area to see what other researchers are doing. With every thing you read ask, "Why?" or "How would results be different if..?"
Tip: in the discussion section of many research articles the author proposes further areas of inquiry. This means they are giving you ideas!
