What's a Citation Index and Why Use One?

Articles, books, and other resources an author cites in a bibliography can be valuable research leads.

These 'cited references' also allow a published scholar to determine who has consulted the scholar's work and to determine the relationship of the new scholarship to the work cited.

This guide describes databases available through Auraria Library that can search cited references. Web of Science is specifically oriented to unearthing cited references.

This guide also lists databases that reveal measures of a journals influence, including the Journal Citation Reports (JCR).

Databases That Unearth Citations

The databases below, with the exception of Google Scholar, may be accessed by Auraria campus constituents only.

Multisubject

  • Web of Science. This citation database covers the sciences and social sciences. Tutorial on how to use WOS. Note that the 'Author Finder' leads to a citation analysis for a particular author including "H-Factor," a measure of "impact."
  • ScienceDirect. Covers the sciences and social sciences. In Advanced Search Mode, use pull-down menu and change 'All Fields' to References for both search boxes.  In first box put in, at least, the author's last name.  In the second box, put the title of the book, article, or other writing in parenthesis (to assure a phrase search).
  • Google Scholar (GS). This free online index to multi-disciplinary scholarly literature captures cited references in all disciplines. Note that extraneous links may also be included, but overall GS captures many cited references. It will be most effective when searching for cites of a particular piece of writing.  Put the title of the book or article in the 'exact phrase' search box and the authors last name in the 'with at least one of the words search box.  You will likely pull up a reference to the piece of writing with a link to 'cited by.'  That link is a beginning but may not be all the works that cited the book or article.  Scan the results for more.   Note that GoogleScholar pulls in citations from JSTOR.
  • Academic Search Premier. Choose 'Cited References' from choices across top of page.
  • Sage Journals Online. Change search (on pull-down menu) from being limited to 'All Fields' to being limited to "References". Search name you wish to locate in References in this format: "Smith, A."
  • LGBT Life. Choose 'Cited References' from choices across top of page.
