Film Reviews with Substance

Nanook of the North Movie PosterThe databases below will lead you to articles containing scholarly film reviews. 

Search by the title of a film and combine it with the name of a prominent actor in the film or the director to find commentary on your film in one of the databases below.  Example:  Gladiator and Russell Crowe.

If you'd like to just browse books containing film commentary, try a search in the Start My Research search box on the Library's home page.  Sample keyword search combinations that will be useful will be:  film criticism; motion pictures and history; motion pictures reviews.  Photo credit. 

  • Project Muse
    Full-text online access to journals published by scholarly publishers, primarily in the humanities.
  • JSTOR
    JSTOR. Full-text scholarly journals in all disciplines.
  • Academic Search Premier
    Before doing the search, click on the box (to make a check mark appear) on the search page that limits retrieval to Scholarly/Peer-Reviewed Journals.
  • MLA International Bibliography
    MLA indexes scholarly writings in the fields of literature and languages.
  • Film & Television Literature Index with Full Text
    This database covers a wide variety film & television-related topics including Variety Magazine movie reviews from 1914 to present and over 36,300 images.
  • Magill's Cinema review books
    These print-format collections in the Auraria Library contain critical essays on films. Note the copyright date of each collection to determine if the film you're interested in might be included.
