What's a Citation Manager?

Citation Managers are tools to help you keep track of your sources and cite them during the research and writing process. They allow you to sort and organize sources under lists and folders and add identifier tags.

Some managers require a lot of set up investment, but they can be particularly useful when:

  • you are writing multiple long papers, especially across many classes
  • writing a dissertation, thesis, capstone paper, etc.
  • doing research for multiple projects at the same time

Most citation managers can:

  • format and create bibliographies using specific citation styles
  • insert in-text citations and bibliography entries in Microsoft Word
  • store source materials
