AI at Auraria Library

AI at Auraria Library Welcome and Purpose

This guide provides general information and considerations about the decision to use artificial intelligence (AI) tools in academia.

The Library does not endorse or recommend any specific AI tool, and does not have access to any AI tools that require payment or subscriptions.

You will learn how to:

  • define general concepts in artificial intelligence (AI).
  • identify benefits, limitations, and ethical issues about using AI tools.
  • differentiate between AI tools, search engines, and library databases.
  • discover how the AI tool was trained by exploring their documentation.

We have used AI tools to create portions of this guide, and cited the AI tool used, using MLA style

AI is a rapidly evolving technology, with a variety of ethical and legal concerns. The information on this guide is not intended to be comprehensive but is intended to provide points to consider if you are deciding whether or not to use an AI tool.

AI Instruction Offered By The Library

Instruction Services librarians teach information literacy skills, which are essential in evaluating information tools and their output. Like any specialized technology, not every librarian is familiar with every tool. AI technology is growing a phenomenal pace and we're all racing to keep up! Here are some guidelines for how we might be able to help.

We can teach how to:

  • differentiate between AI tools, search engines, and library databases.
  • evaluate AI tools or websites that use AI.
  • discover how the AI is trained. This includes the AI tool's purpose, capabilities, and limitations.
  • verify if a source or citation provided by AI is real or fake.
  • locate the original source.

We cannot assist with:

  • teaching specific AI tools.
  • using AI to find resources.

Auraria Campus Policies And Resources

Each institution served by the Auraria Library has their own policies for AI use, which are typically found in the Academic Integrity or IT policies. Each institution has instructors set policies for their courses.

Always read your syllabus for the course policy and consult with your institution or instructor before using an AI tool for your work.
