Special Collections and Finding Aids

This guide includes information on the collections available to users in Special Collections. These materials can be viewed in the Special Collections Reading Room at Auraria Library.

ASC:001 Donald Sutherland

The papers of Donald Sutherland comprise a large part of a collection which also includes several books, periodicals, and art objects belonging to the prominent literary  figure and University of Colorado-Boulder professor. The bulk of the manuscript material was produced during the years when Sutherland  was  most  active in the  teaching  and  writing professions (ca. 1940-1975), up to the time of his death in 1978. Because there are several materials that relate to and were created by some of his older relatives, the earliest papers date back to the late 19th century.

ASC:002 Colorado Women's Conference

The Colorado Women’s conference was held at the University of Colorado at Boulder, June 3-5, 1977. The collection consists primarily of correspondence, minutes, and reports related to the planning and implementation of the state conference.

ASC:006 Henry F. Halliday

Henry F. Halliday was the Assistant Project Director of the Amache Relocation Center in Granada, Colorado. He kept an extensive scrapbook and other materials relating to his experience at Amache. He preceded his post at Amache by working with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and so brought expertise to assist Japanese Americans with agricultural production and with relations between the camp and the surrounding farmers. While there, he also became involved with Amache’s various sports teams, and procured the means by which they traveled to other locales to play other teams, sometimes running into criticism.

ASC:009 Kathy Odum

Kathy Odum was a high school teacher, counselor, and senior class sponsor at the Amache Senior High School from 1942-1945. This collection contains publications by and for the high school students at the Amache Relocation Center, reports on Japanese Americans in Colorado, and a taped interview with Kathy Odum.

ASC:011 Phillip Tigges

This collection includes 13 photographs of Amache in 1982.

ASC:012 Duncan/Stoddard correspondence

The Duncan/Stoddard Letters Collection is comprised of letters written by Uselma Duncan and other members of his family. The letters span a period from 1857 to 1864. The bulk of the correspondence deals with Uselma's life as a member of the 71st N.Y. Volunteer Regiment during the early days of the Civil War, and with his death at the First Battle of Bull Run on September 21, 1861.

ASC:013 Legis 50/Citizens Conference on State Legislatures

Materials related to the Citizens Conference of State Legislatures, a conference with the goal of improving the functioning of state legislatures.

ASC:014 American Institute of Planners, Colorado Chapter

Collection of minutes from the Colorado chapter of the American Institute of Planners.

ASC:015 Bertram Morris

Bertram Morris was a philosophy professor at the University of Colorado - Denver who served on the board of the American Civil Liberties Union of Colorado.

ASC:018 Auraria Relocation

Auraria Campus in Downtown Denver is a higher education campus that was constructed through an urban renewal project that displaced approximately 900 individuals. This collection contains administrative records and materials related to the relocation of residents from the Auraria Urban Renewal Project site, including reports, informational notices, planning committees’ meeting records, clippings, and articles.

ASC:019 Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, Colorado Chapter

The Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom collection includes material dating from 1951-1970. Subjects include women of Colorado, civil resistance, peace, pacificism, disarmament, and other political activities of that time. There is also reference to Wilma Nissley, Emily Greene Balch, Jane Addams, Gertrude Bear and Clara Lee. Artifacts include a magnetic reel to reel, WILPF binder, photographs, posters, and scrapbooks.

ASC:024 Ninth Street Historic Park

Ninth Street Historic Park is a block of Victorian houses between Curtis and Champa Streets. Preserved in a park setting, this block contains the oldest part of Denver and has been integrated into the Auraria Campus. This collection consists of architectural, administrative, financial, and historical research files as well as maps that were amassed while converting Ninth Street from a residential block into offices for Auraria Campus between 1972 and 1976.

ASC:026 Frank C. Abbott Research Notes

This material was collected by Dr. Abbott at the time he was involved in the planning of the Auraria Higher Education Center in downtown Denver. He used this material extensively while doing research for his book The Auraria Higher Education Center: How It Came To Be. This title was published in 1999 by the Auraria Higher Education Center in Denver, Colorado. The bulk of these records cover the time period of 1967 to 1972.

In the late 1970s a movement was started to try and again the land back from the federal government. Letters in the collection are addressed to William W. Coons, Denver, Colorado.  William W. Coons is the author of The Sagebrush Rebellion : legitimate assertion of States rights or retrograde land grab? A selected subject bibliography and resource guide (Monticello IL : Vance Bibliographies, 1981), published as no 667 of the Vance Bibliographies Public Administration Series.
