CSE is used by many fields of scientific research.
CSE Style has three systems to cite sources:
- Citation-Name
- alphabetized reference list
- in-text citations identified by superscript numerals
- Reference List Citation Example
- Lastname F. Article title. Journal title. Year;volume(issue):page numbers.

- Citation-Sequence
- reference list sources numbered sequentially by order they appear in-text
- in-text citations identified by superscript numerals
- Reference List Citation Example
- Lastname F. Article title. Journal title. Year;volume(issue):page numbers.
- Langdon A. Fit for a dog? Food sharing and the medieval human/animal divide. Society & animals. 2020;28(1):41-57.
- Name-Year
- reference list alphabetical by author name
- in-text citations identified by parentheses with author name and year of publication
- Reference List Citation Example
- Lastname F. Year. Article title. Journal title. Volume(issue):page numbers.
- Tawada Y, Bourdaghs M. 2018. Dandelions dancing in the snow. Japan forum (Oxford, England). 30(1):12-25.
