Middle Search Plus
Designed primarily for middle- and junior high school audiences, this database contains full text for more than 150 popular magazines, and provides indexing and abstracts for nearly 200 magazines. All full-text articles are assigned a reading level indicator. Full text is also available for thousands of biographies, historical essays and pamphlets and primary source documents. Also included: Essential Documents in American History, 116,000 images (photos, maps and flags), and 96,600 biographies.
Primary Search provides Indexing and full text for popular magazines on many topics and pamphlets for elementary school research. It includes the third edition of the American Heritage Children's Dictionary, the Encyclopedia of Animals for info on the nature and habitat of familiar animals, and a large image collection of photographs, maps, and flags.
Your Search: Finding RELEVANT Articles
First, organize your research topic into concepts. Concepts are typically nouns or noun phrases.
- For example, if you are counseling in elementary schools, your concepts might be:
- elementary school
Using a databases's Advanced Search, enter each concept and its synonyms into a separate search line.
- counseling OR counselling
- "elementary school" OR "primary school"
Use quotation marks around phrases, these are typically noun phrases that you would find a definition of in a dictionary.
Use * for truncation.
- Counsel* will find counseling, counsel, counselling, counselor, etc.
Limit to peer-reviewed articles if necessary.
Limit by date if necessary.
Too many or too few results?
- Use the thesaurus or Subject Index to find related, broader, narrower, and similar terms OR specific terms that the databases uses to describe a topic.
- Too many results? Use a narrower term.
- Too few results? Use a broader term.
Find an article that looks interesting?
- Click on the article's title.
- Look at the subjects given to an article to find related terms and run additional searches using these terms.
- Click on the references, cited by, or see similar documents links to find related articles.
